It’s Friday and I am so excited that the weekend is just around the corner! This week, I wanted to do a fun project with my older girls (5 & 7) and decided on painting pumpkins with rainbow colors. My theme lately has been Fall crafts for kids so I was trying to stick with this genre and hopefully I’ll come up with a few more Fall projects before the holiday season fully takes over.
This project is pretty simple but requires a little guidance to actually get through the pattern of rainbow colors without just turning the painting into a free for all Rainbow marbled project. This approach is fun as well but I really wanted to see if I could get my girls to focus on building a rainbow around the pumpkins.
For this project you will need:
- a pumpkin, real or styrofoam
- craft paint in the colors of the rainbow (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple)
- 1/2″ paintbrush, or a larger paintbrush
- Jar of Water
- Paint palette
- Newspaper or Paper towels, some sort of surface protector
- gold glitter
We prepped our workspace up high enough that our one year old couldn’t get into the paint, and added paper towels to protect the surface. I had the girls add the paint colors to their paint palette and I tried not to micromanage too much.
After we had the paint in the palette and in a good order (to reinforce the rainbow pattern) I had the girls simply paint stripe after stripe in the order of the rainbow. There were spills and dripping paint but this project turned out to be really really fun and pretty.
After the pumpkins were painted in their rainbow glory, I let the girls sprinkle them with golden glitter and our pumpkins were complete! The girls love their pumpkins and I am happy to have a simple, successful project.
While painting these rainbows, I distracted the other two with fun Fall play doh just add 2 tsps cinnamon to this recipe and use orange coloring. It smells amazing!!
