I started writing in a journal when I was a kid and have always found it therapeutic. It’s good to get your thoughts out and somehow writing them down makes it easy to move forward with life, gives you peace and is just a great daily exercise. I got back into journaling when I was pregnant and have been on and off with it for the past few years. I’ve realized you really need the right journal to propel you into writing and to keep you going back to it until it becomes a routine.
There are a variety of very beautiful, handmade journals that can be found on Etsy and many of the shop owners will even personalize your journal making it truly unique. Journals are hard to start but once you do it becomes easier to be a regular writer. Expressing your thoughts at the end of the day with a glass of iced tea or at the beginning of the day with a cup of coffee can really help you to clarify current life issues and make plans for the future.
Journal writing can capture a small piece of your current life and later when you look back on it, you will be surprised by the little details you may have forgotten. Journals are particularly great while travelling or going through a life transition like a new job, wedding, baby, home etc. They can help you to think through complex feelings and to remember the ups and downs of daily life, capturing a piece of who you were in a particular moment of your life.
Journals also make excellent gifts and it is fun to select a perfect one for a friend. The red one above was a recent great find that I came across at target for only $2.99! What an amazing steal. Leather journals are always great because they are extremely durable and protected but if you are looking to just start journaling I like the one above because it is inexpensive, simple and thin… not a daunting book to fill up.
